So, we’ve talked a lot about renting your first apartment - mostly from a renters point of view. As a review, things that you need to think about are:
-The type of apartment that you want to rent - basement, part of a house, small building, high rise, studio/bachelor, multi-bedroom -Choosing an area to live in - what town/city and then the specific neighbourhood -Your budget - what can you afford? -Additional costs involved, such as: 1. first and last months rent 2. security deposit 3. utilities - included or not? 4. renters insurance 5. deposits on bills for new accounts 6. gas, hydro, water, phone, internet, cable 7. furnishing your apartment - think anything and everything from a couch to your toothpaste
We’ll go through some of these again as a group but I would like you to start thinking about the other side of a rental agreement. The Landlord. We’re going to take a look at the Ontario Tenants Act. This is very important information for you to know about your rights and the rights of your landlord.
